Auto Enhance and Straighten
One click improves a photo with editable adjustment layers, Crop offers to straighten a tilted horizon, and pastes fit the canvas.
koi.photo does a few things for you so a photo looks right sooner: Auto Enhance balances it, Crop notices a tilted horizon, and a big pasted image fits the canvas. None of this is a black box. Every result is an ordinary layer, setting or crop box that you can see, change or undo in one step.
Auto Enhance
Click Auto in the Adjustments panel, or in Quick actions in the Properties panel when nothing is selected.
koi.photo reads your photo and adds a group called Auto with four normal adjustment layers:
| Layer | What Auto sets |
|---|---|
| Auto · Levels | Black and white points, so the darkest and brightest parts of the photo use the full range |
| Auto · White Balance | Temperature and tint that take out a colour cast, judged from the whole photo and its brightest parts |
| Auto · Exposure | Brightness, nudged halfway towards a balanced mid-tone |
| Auto · Vibrance | A gentle lift for flat colours (never more than +40) |
A short message says what changed, for example "Auto: levels 31–224, +0.2 EV, warmer, +8 vibrance".
The Auto window that opens has two more controls:
- Strength is the group's opacity. 100 % is the full Auto result, 50 % is halfway between your photo and Auto.
- Hold to compare (or hold the \ key, as in Lightroom) shows the photo without Auto while you hold it. This is only a preview: it doesn't touch the history.
Every number stays editable. Open any "Auto · …" layer in the Layers panel to change its sliders, hide it or delete it. To get rid of Auto completely, press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z) once, or delete the group.
Tip: hover over Auto before you click it. The photo shows the result straight away, and moving away puts it back.
Straighten a tilted horizon
Press C for the Crop tool. koi.photo looks for a long horizontal line, such as a horizon or the edge of a table, or for a vertical one such as a building. If it finds one that is tilted by up to 10°, a Straighten 2.4° button appears in the bar above the canvas.
Click Straighten
The photo rotates so the line is level, and the crop box shrinks to the largest rectangle that has no empty corners. This is one undo step, called "Straighten".
Adjust and apply the crop
Move or resize the crop box if you like, then press Return (or click Apply) to crop.
koi.photo never straightens on its own; it only offers. If the photo is already level, or it can't find a clear line, there's no button.
Straighten by hand
Press C again to switch to the Straighten tool (it shares the Crop button in the Tools panel). Drag along a line that should be level, such as the horizon, or one that should be upright. When you let go, the photo rotates by that angle and Crop takes over with the trimmed box, ready for Return.
Paste and place images
When you paste (⌘V, Ctrl+V) or drop an image that is larger than your document, koi.photo scales it down to fit inside the canvas, keeps its proportions and centres it, like Photoshop's "Resize image during place". A message tells you by how much ("Fitted to canvas (27 %)").
- ⌥V (Alt+V on Windows) pastes the image at 100 % instead, without fitting. You find it in Edit ▸ Paste ▸ At 100 % too.
- With a pixel selection, the pasted image is centred on the selection.
- Pasted screenshots get a useful layer name, like "Pasted image 14:02".
- Copying and pasting your own layers works as before: they paste in place, or 10 px down and right when you duplicate in the same document.
The fit is part of the paste, so one ⌘Z removes the whole paste.
